Cartoon #12
Title of cartoon: Same-Sex Marriage

What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?
- In the cartoon, a man and a woman are holding a sign that says "Quit redefining marriage." A man holding a sign that says "Marriage equality now" replies by saying "Then quit giving birth to gay people." The cartoon is illustrating that as long as there is gay people in the world, then marriage will need to be redefined in order to create equal rights among all. The man who is in support of gay marriage creates the idea that gay people are born gay and it is not something that can be changed.

Tone of the cartoon:
1) Positive framing of sexual minorities
2) Framing is positive to equal rights for sexual minorities
What “reality” is constructed/framed about sexual minorities and their rights?

- The reality that is constructed about gay marriage is that gay people are born gay. It is hard to tell people to stop redefining marriage when everyday more people are coming into the world and may be gay. As long as they are human beings, gay or not, the cartoon is illustrating that people should have equal rights. The cartoon frames sexual minorities in a positive way and is showing that they should have the same rights as everybody else.

Cartoon #13
Title of cartoon: Same-Sex Marriage

What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?
- In the cartoon a man is holding up a sign that states "no gay marriage." Under him is a quote saying, "The gays are making a mockery of marriage. Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman performed by a priest, judge, Elvis impersonator, sea captain or mail- order reverend of the Universal Life Church. The cartoon is illustrating that marriage is already no longer sacred due to many reasons. The cartoon is saying that gay marriage isn't making a mockery of marriage, but getting married by an Elvis impersonator however does.

Tone of the cartoon:
1) Positive framing of sexual minorities
2) Framing is positive to equal rights for sexual minorities
What “reality” is constructed/framed about sexual minorities and their rights?

- The reality that is constructed from this cartoon is that it is foolish to say that gay marriage makes a mockery of marriage when heterosexual couples make a mockery of marriage in their own ways. The cartoon frames gay marriage in a positive way. It shows that no matter what kind of marriage people partake in, some people are making a mockery out of it by the way it is performed. So, there is no need to judge and try to restrict gay marriage and their rights.
