Throughout all of the political cartoons, it is evident that there are major themes. The themes of the same sex marriage cartoons are:
- Threatening Marriage
- Redefining Bible and Marriage
- Progression
Most of the political cartoons that I found were in support of same sex marriage and very few were against it. The cartoons about same sex marriage threatening heterosexual marriage were almost all in favor of same sex marriage by making heterosexual couples seem like their marriages were not good. They played a lot on cheating, domestic abuse, and other issues that may ruin a marriage.
In the case of redefining the Bible and marriage, the political cartoons were both against and with same sex marriage. They showed how the Bible has specific scriptures against same sex marriage and how people try to switch up the words in order for it to work in their favor. When it came to redefining marriage, the cartoonist pointed out how society needs to redefine marriage in order to give equal rights to all people.
In the theme of progression, the political cartoons were in favor of same sex marriage. The cartoons portrayed same sex marriage as progression and without it we would just be going in circles and not moving forward.
